With our current heat wave on the East Coast, I thought it would be fit to write a fast article, if I can help to save one dog from heat exhaustion this article will be well worth my time.
1.) I am putting this one first since it is the most important. Keep your dog hydrated!
Give your dogs lots of water. These are Cane Corsos, they need lots of water so be sure to get a 5 gallon pail and fill it to the top three times per day to keep it fresh and cool.
2.) Let your dogs run in the morning and at night.
The best time to let them run is before the sun is hot and after 6pm. I take my dogs to run at 6:30am each morning, then I will feed them and let them in if I know it will be a hot day.
3.) Get a Pool! You do not need anything big, a kiddie pool will do for a Cane Corso, you can find these at Walmart from $15-$30.00. Place the pool in the shade and male sure it is filled twice per day.
4.) Swim! If you do not have an area to exercise your dog take them to the beach or a clean lake, you will be amazed at the bond this can create. I live across from a river so this works perfectly for me and my dogs.
5.) Listen to your dog. If your dog does not want to go out its vert simple! Let them out to do their business then bring them back in. My dogs love to go out, but on hot days they will stay by the door and beg to come back in, listen to your dogs and let them in.
6.) Let them dig holes. You will find your dog doing lots of digging in the heat. It may seem weird to us since we would expect them to keep calm and relax, fact is relaxing in a hole in the ground is a very good way for a Cane Corso to cool off, this may make you upset to see more holes, however if the end result is a cool dog then who cares!
